Saoirse Williamson: A Young Conservationist on a Mission

The Ōtaki Kids Market is known for showcasing young entrepreneurs with big dreams and even bigger hearts. Among the talented youth at our market is Saoirse Williamson, a passionate conservationist who is making a difference for the environment—one butterfly at a time.

Saoirse at the Butterfly Habitat

Saoirse and her friends first captured our attention with their fundraising efforts at the Ōtaki Kids Market.

The wasn’t just about raising money; it was about raising awareness. Saoirse is on a mission to increase the population of New Zealand's beautiful but threatened admiral butterflies. These striking creatures, with their vibrant black, white, and orange wings, play a vital role in our ecosystems, but their numbers are declining due to habitat loss and other environmental challenges.

A Habitat at Horowhenua College

With the funds she raised, Saoirse partnered with her school, Horowhenua College, to establish a butterfly habitat on the school grounds. This space, designed to support the lifecycle of admiral butterflies, is a carefully curated area filled with native plants, nectar-rich flowers, and plenty of shelter for butterflies and their larvae.

Recently, Saoirse invited the Ōtaki Kids Market team to visit the habitat. As we toured the area, she shared her knowledge about the plants and their role in supporting butterfly populations. She pointed out caterpillars feasting on nettle leaves, chrysalises tucked away in hidden corners, and adult butterflies. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and it was clear how much thought and care had gone into creating this sanctuary.

Why This Matters

Saoirse’s work is a reminder that small actions can lead to significant change. By creating butterfly-friendly spaces and educating others about their importance, she’s not only helping the admiral butterfly population but also inspiring others to care for the environment. The habitat at Horowhenua College is now a living classroom, teaching students and visitors about conservation and the importance of protecting native species.

How You Can Help

Saoirse encourages everyone to get involved in butterfly conservation. Whether it’s planting a butterfly-friendly garden, avoiding harmful pesticides, or simply spreading the word about their plight, every effort counts. If you'd like to support her mission further, you can visit her stall at the next Ōtaki Kids Market, where she’ll be sharing updates and offering more ways to get involved.

We’re incredibly proud to have Saoirse as part of the Ōtaki Kids Market family. Her passion, hard work, and determination are a shining example of what young people can achieve when they follow their hearts and work toward a cause they believe in.
